LIBERTY — An Amite County nursing home is being investigated for possible violations of federal labor laws, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor said Tuesday.
Department of Labor spokesman Michael Wald said officials with the department’s Wage and Hour Division visited Liberty Community Living Center in Liberty on Tuesday looking for possible violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which deals with minimum wage and overtime pay.
Wald would not discuss specific complaints.
Questions about the wage and hour division officials’ visit were referred by the nursing home staff to Chris Hill, director of legal services for Community Eldercare Services, a management company that has a contract with the nursing home.
Hill said the company contracts with nursing homes for services such as payroll, billing and other activities.
He said Tuesday that he talked to a wage and hour representative, but has not seen any documents from the agency outlining specific complaints.
According to its Web site, Community Eldercare Services manages 20 nursing homes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Mississippi has the most under contract to the company with 12.
