He said Monley, 38, was sitting in the passenger seat of a 2015 Chrysler 300 at the guard shack when Alexander allegedly approached the driver’s side and opened fire.
Varnado said Alexander began shooting through the window, striking Monley once in the left side with a small-caliber handgun.
He said the bullet that killed Monley beneath his left armpit.
Varnado said no motive has been established.
Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said Monley went by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:58 a.m.
Pittman said he was called to the hospital at 2:15 a.m. after attempts to revive Monley were unsuccessful.
Pittman said Monley’s body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
Varnado said the initial findings of the investigation pointed to Alexander as the gunman.
Officers located Alexander around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Community Parks and arrested him.
Detectives then interviewed Alexander and charged him with Monley’s murder.

In 2010, Alexander stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Anita Smith, at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Mississippi Street.
Alexander was sentenced in to five years on each charge.

He served six of the 10 years and was on probation when Sunday’s shooting occured.
Alexander remained in the Pike County jail this morning in lieu of $100,000 bond.
