McComb City Attorney John “Bubber” White said today that he is reviewing the deed to Edgewood Park after residents in the area asked whether the construction of a Miracle League field there would improperly remove remaining green space.
“There’s been an issue raised as to whether or not the Miracle League ballfield can go into the Edgewood Park,” White said. “They’re saying there’s something in the deed where it can’t be used for the Miracle League … a covenant in the deed.”
The project is scheduled for a groundbreaking ceremony in Edgewood Park on Monday, and city officials said that has not been canceled but they would await White’s advice.
“As you know, the original option was out at the Sports Park,” City Administrator Jim Storer said.
“We can still have it there. But I can not imagine that that ballfield could not be there (at Edgewood Park).”
Officials in Pike County’s chancery clerk’s office said the deed dated to the 1930s. A faxed copy had been received but not reviewed by presstime.
Local Miracle League director Ronnie Wilkinson said he had a scheduled meeting with White this morning and was not immediately sure what other plans might be necessary.
“I met with the city today,” Wilkinson said.
“We’re going to proceed with the July 7 celebration, and the city is working to resolve any issues.”
A call to Mike Austin, who represents the residents, was not returned on deadline.
