A McComb man is dead and his wife is in intensive care at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center today after a Thursday night house fire on Wilson Street.
McComb firefighters went to the home of Oscar and Norma McDowell, 1010 Wilson St., around 11:14 p.m.
Fire Chief B.J. Nettles said firemen found Oscar McDowell, 77, in his room. He was a paraplegic, and his wife, 76, reportedly managed to get him out of bed and into a wheelchair but no further.
Firefighters found her in the hallway, where she’d collapsed from smoke inhalation. They revived her with CPR, and she went to the hospital by ambulance.
Firemen brought the fire under control around 11:55. Nettles said the cause is undetermined, and the State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating. The house had severe fire damage on the west end of the house, and smoke and water damage.
