Centreville was rocked when a man opened fire on two men at Pine Tree Apartment Complex around 10 p.m. June 13, eventually turning the gun on himself.
Walter Jones, 65, opened fire on Billy Joe Allen, 52, and Anthony Andrews, 36, at the Pine Tree Apartment complex.
Police Chief Jimmy Ray Reese said Jones, for unknown reasons, came out of an apartment complex and began shooting.
Allen and Andrews ran into an apartment of a unidentified female resident and hid.
Reese said Jones followed the men and continued to fire shots.
The men were shot in the chest and arm. Their injuries were apparently not life-threatening.
Reese said that when he and Assistant Chief Carlos Lee arrived at the apartment complex, they tried to talk Jones into coming out of the apartment.
Reese said that while lawmen were trying to talk to Jones, they heard a gunshot.
Jones had turned the gun on himself and died of a single gunshot wound to the head, Reese said.
He said police can’t find a motive for the shooting.
“There was not an argument nor fight involved, as far as our investigation has been able to determine,” he said.
He said the community is shocked by the incident, and left looking for answers they’ll probably never get.
“Walter Jones and I are almost the same age, and I have known him and his family most of my life. He was a good man and never was in trouble,” he said. “I know that he was really sick and fighting a bad illness, so maybe that’s what led to this shooting.”
