The apparent beating death of a Bogue Chitto man at a McComb bar late Monday night marked the second homicide in the city since Saturday, capping off an exceptionally violent Memorial Day weekend.
Shaun Wallace, 25, was pronounced dead at the Upper Deck Sports Bar on South Railroad Boulevard after he reportedly got into an argument over a pool game, McComb police detective Sid Boyte said this morning.
Boyte said officers received a report of an unresponsive man at the bar at 10:45.
He said a fight erupted between a group of men, and Wallace was struck by a white man who fled the scene.
Boyte said investigators have the name of Wallace’s suspected attacker, but police are not releasing it this early on in the investigation.
Boyte said initial reports of a security guard being involved in the attack are inaccurate.
He said the guard, along with other employees and customers, were trying to break up the fight.
Jason Odom, 36, of Brookhaven, also was injured during the fighting and treated and released at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center.
Boyte said Wallace’s body has been sent to Jackson where an autopsy will be performed.
Wallace’s death highlights a string of violent acts over the Memorial Day weekend.
Early Saturday morning, Liston Terrell Brown, 29, was fatally stabbed in his yard.
Detective Deska Varnado said Brown, 29, died after being stabbed during a fight with Dexter Robinson, and Triana Anderson allegedly joined the fray and stabbed Brown.
Anderson faces second-degree murder charges in connection with Brown’s death. She remained in the Pike County jail this morning with no bond set.
And the Pike County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that took place at 1131 Avenue C Extension early Saturday.
Roy D. Boss, Cedric K. Martin and Antonio L. Bridges were sitting in a car when an unidentified man walked up to the men and began shooting.
Boss was shot twice in the side, Cedric Martin was shot four times in the leg and Bridges was shot twice in the chest.
McComb police Detective Shannon Sullivan said it’s unusual for McComb to see this amount of violence in such a short period of time.
“It’s the first major holiday of the new year and people don’t know how to act,” he said.
Boyte said crime waves of this magnitude “come in spurts.”
The wave of violence in the area began on May 12, when Zerrick Ward, 34, of Quinlivan Road in Magnolia died after a masked man came to his home and opened fire on him after he answered the door. Ward was able to describe to police what happened to him before he died.
