A Brookhaven man is charged with one count of murder and four counts of aggravated assault following an earling morning shooting that left a man dead and his wife and three children injured.
Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell said that Jermaine Sims, 31, died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center this morning.
Also injured in the shooting were Sims’ wife, Victoria, 29, and their children, two girls, ages 14 and 9, and a 6-year-old boy.
Bell told the Clarion-Ledger that Jermaine Sims and the children were being treated at UMC, where they were listed in critical condition, while Victoria Sims was taken to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Bell said 32-year-old Jimmy Lyons was initially charged with five counts of aggravated assault, but one of those counts was upgraded to murder after Jermaine Sims died.
The chief said it appears Lyons acted alone.
“One guy is responsible for everything, saying he is responsible for everything,” Bell said.
Bell said shots rang out around 12:20 this morning after an argument between Lyons and Jermaine Sims, although he did not know what led to the dispute, or why Lyons would have shot the children.
“We don’t know, only that it stemmed from an altercation between Lyons and Sims,” he said.
Lyons had been living with the family in their home at 1097 South First St. home after he lost his rental home, the Clarion-Ledger reported.
Bell said Lyons was still at the home when officers responded. He told the Clarion-Ledger that Victoria Sims and two of the children were outside the home when police arrived, while Jermaine Sims and the other child remained inside.
