A Forest man has been charged with manslaughter in a fatal Memorial Day attack at the Upper Deck Sports Bar in McComb.
Russell L. Creason, 35, surrendered to McComb police Wednesday afternoon and was charged in the beating death of Shaun Wallace, 25, of Bogue Chitto.
Creason came to the police department with his attorney and was taken into custody without incident, detectives said.
He stood before McComb Municipal Judge Brandon Frazier, who set Creason’s bond at $250,000.
Creason was arraigned later that evening and transported to the Pike County jail, where he remained this morning.
Detectives said Wallace and several people were in a fight Monday night, although they haven’t speculated what led to the fracas.
Detective Shannon Sullivan said various reports of Creason running down Wallace and hitting him in the head aren’t true, nor are accusations that Wallace bumped into someone when he was playing pool, leading to the fight.
Authorities said no objects or weapons were apparently used in the attack.
McComb found Wallace unresponsive when they arrived at the scene.
Paramedics and officers tried to revive Wallace, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives said Creason fled after the fight.
Sullivan said Wednesday that witnesses are still being questioned and police are following up on other leads, including the possibility of a video that might have recorded the attack.
This is the second homicide investigation launched in the city in the past week.
In the other case, Trayana Anderson remains jailed without bond in the Saturday stabbing death of Liston Terrell Brown, 29.
Anderson, 25, 410 N. Clark Avenue, Magnolia, is charged with second-degree murder in the case.
Police said Brown got into a heated argument with Anderson’s boyfriend, Dexter Robinson, along with Robinson’s brother, Wally Brown Jr. after the group drove up to an apartment where Brown was sitting outside and exchanged words.
Detective Deska Varnado said Robinson exited the vehicle and began fighting with Brown, who reportedly hit Robinson in the head with a bottle.
As the men fell to the ground and fought, Anderson allegedly stabbed Brown in the upper right chest, hitting a main artery, and fled the scene.
Detectives said the difference between Anderson’s and Creason’s charges is that Anderson introduced a deadly weapon into the dispute between Robinson and Brown.
Second-degree murder is defined as “the commission of an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved heart, regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual.”
It carries a sentence of 25 years to life.
Manslaughter is defined as the “killing of a human being without malice, in the heat of passion, but in a cruel or unusual manner, or by the use of a dangerous weapon, without authority of law, and not in necessary self-defense.”
Voluntary manslaughter carries a sentence of five to 40 years in prison and between a $2,000 to $20,000 fine.
Involuntary manslaughter carries a sentence of two to 20 years in prison and a $1,000 to $10,000 fine.
