A McComb man told police he was carjacked at his apartment complex and forced to drive 45 minutes away to Hammond, La., where gunmen left him at an interstate exit and drove off in his vehicle.
Derrick Conerly said he was sitting in his 2007 white Chevrolet Tahoe at Magnolia Pointe Apartments, 1240 Parklane Road, at 5:30 a.m. Friday when two black males wearing hoodies and bandanas over their faces approached his vehicle.
Detective Shannon Sullivan said one of the men told Conerly to “give it up” before getting in the passenger seat and ordering him to drive while the other followed in a silver Chevrolet Cruze.
Sullivan said the gunman told Conerly to drive toward New Orleans.
Once he reached Hammond, his abductor told him to pull over at the University Avenue exit and get out, and then drove away in Conerly’s vehicle.
Conerly called his wife and told her to pick him up in Hammond.
Sullivan said once the couple arrived back in McComb, Conerly came to the department to report the carjacking.
Conerly told officers he had a small amount of cash on him that the men also took.
Sullivan said Conerly’s vehicle has 26-inch black chrome rims. He said Conerly has a Mississippi license plate with the tag number C193 CH.
Hours before the carjacking took place Errol Babbs reported the break-in of his 2002 GMC Yukon at the same apartment complex.
Babbs told officers the theft occurred between 10:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. Friday.
He said someone damaged the steering column.
Sullivan said the intruder destroyed the ignition.
In another case, Southern Colonial Homes nearby on Presley Boulevard, reported a burglary of a mobile home at 11:15 a.m. Friday.
Company officials said the break-in took place between 6 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday.
Someone entered a 2016 double-wide trailer and took a Frigidaire glass-top stove worth $350 and a Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerator worth $700, and damaged a sliding door.
