The Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Mississippi’s biggest fundraising event of the year takes place Thursday evening. The twist is that it’s the group’s 2016 fundraiser.
Board chair Vickie Webb explained that in 2015 she met University of Southern Mississippi and New Orleans Saints football alum Deuce McAllister, who said he would love to participate in a Boys & Girls Club fundraiser.
But just as plans were coming together, McAllister took a job as Saints color commentator for radio broadcasts, after which his schedule became too hectic to get away.
Webb said club leaders regrouped and enlisted former LSU head basketball coach John Brady as keynote speaker, and the show will go on.
The event takes place at St. Andrew’s Activity Center and features a steak dinner from Tortilla Soup Mexican restaurant.
A wide array of auction items includes footballs autographed by the Saints, an autographed Bret Favre jersey and other sports memorabilia, and tickets to a suite at a Southern Mississippi-Tulane baseball game, catering included.
A reception for fundraiser attendees will take place afterward at the Courtyard. Webb said the evening’s proceeds will go toward operating expenses and a much-needed gym at the club.

The fundraiser is 6:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew’s Activity Center, 201 Main St. in downtown McComb. Tickets are $100 and available from Curtis Butler of First Bank, Stephanie Carr McGhee at Dazzlin’ Dancewear or any Boys & Girls Club board member, and at the door Thursday evening.
