An Osyka family is picking up the pieces after they lost everything in a Monday morning house fire.
Latoya Powell, the daughter of Shirley and Charlie Powell Jr., who own the Fourth Street home, posted a video on Facebook showing the ruins of the home.
“This was my room, this was the room I used to sleep in,” she said as the video panned over a charred mattress and other items.
Latoya Powell went through the home showing what used to be the master bathroom, a second bathroom, the dining room and her father’s man cave.
Sunlight illuminated the man cave, showing a charred couch near a back wall.
“It didn’t set the videotapes on fire. We can still watch Sanford & Son,” Powell said to her father in the video.
She said her mother was asleep and her father was at home when the house caught fire.
The couple escaped as the fire consumed their house.
No cause of the fire has been determined, but Latoya Powell said her father thinks it was caused by a faulty cellphone charger that was plugged into the socket in a back room.
“The house is a total loss,” Powell said.
Powell has begun a GoFundMe drive to raise money for her parents, with a goal of $5,500.
She said her mother’s CPAP machine, oxygen machine and oxygen tanks were in the home when it caught fire.
“The $5,500 is to cover the cost of her medical expenses, clothing and to help my parents rebuild or purchase a new home,” Powell said.
She said her grandmother built the home in 1971 and her parents have lived in it for eight years.
She said the community has been a tremendous help to her family.
“We’ve received so many calls, text messages, e-mails and people have brought by food, clothing and toiletries. Both sides of our family have been helpful as well,” she said.
