The United Givers Carport Cook-off and 5K Run/Walk enjoyed success Saturday in McComb, raising some $4,600 for United Givers charities while offering flavors of the South.
The annual event featured local city officials and residents taking to their grills and smokers to put together their best recipes for a homemade cookoff.
Chili, jambalaya, chicken wing and thigh contests got to the heart of Southern cooking, while college football played on a big-screen television in the background. The Jubilee Performing Arts Center choir performed at the Depot Pavilion.
Overall winner of the contest was the Excel By 5 group. Appleton Investments secured the title of best jambalaya; Stokes Distributing won the best chicken wings and the best chicken thighs awards; and the Pitt Crew won the People’s Choice Award, which goes to cooks who get the most tips during the competition.
Earlier in the day, Alex Brown outpaced all other adult male runners to come in first place for the 5K Run/Walk. Brown finished the race with a time of 16:44. Jeanette White won the overall women’s division with a time of 25:38, and Peyton Badon won the young adult division.
