Magnolia is gearing up for two major events — a concert and State of the City address on Saturday and a car show on Sept. 12.
McComb bluesman Castro “Mr. Sipp” Coleman will perform at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Town Square in downtown Magnolia. Afterward, Mayor Anthony Witherspoon will address residents.
Coleman was originally scheduled to perform on July 4, but inclement weather prevented that.
Coleman, the son of Johnell and the late Vera Coleman, began playing the guitar at age 6.
With the stage name “Mr. Sipp,” he has become a renowned performer, songwriter, musician, composer, producer and entertainer. Above all of that, Coleman is a God-fearing family man.
He has played on more than 50 recordings with several Grammy-nominated artists. He also was cast in the released James Brown biopic, “Get on Up,” which was filmed in Mississippi.
The Vicksburg Blues Society named him the 2014 International Blues Challenge Winner. Also in 2014, Coleman was the Gibson Best Guitarist Award Winner and a Jus’ Blues Bobby Rush Entertainers Award Recipient. Mr. Sipp also won the 2015 Jackson Music Awards National Male Artist of the Year, the 2015 Jackson Music Award Blues Artist of the Year and the 2015 Jackson Music Award Entertainer of the Year.
On Sept. 12, the Camelia City Classic Cruisers will sponsor a car show from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All proceeds will go to the Magnolia Recreation Department, Alderman Lonnie Cox said.
The show’s most popular vehicle will receive a trophy, and Witherspoon will present his own award.
Cox said vintage vehicles dating all the way back to 1915 will be coming to Magnolia from across the state.
“People are coming from as far away as Vicksburg, Jackson and Clinton. Some are coming from the Coast,” he said.
Cox said several motorcycle groups plan to be in attendance.
“We got a lot coming. It’s going to be a day of enjoyment for everyone,” he said.
The participants will park around the railroad track and down West Main Street all the way to the Co-Op, Cox said.
The Fernwood Fire Department will offer concessions and offer hamburgers.
Entries are $25 for all cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors.
At the conclusion of the event and after the proceeds have been tallied, Cox will present a check to the city.
