A McComb resident pitched the idea of a bond issue to repair streets to the city board on Tuesday.
Noting the existence of another bond for other projects, Jimmy C. Robertson asked Mayor Whitney Rawlings and selectmen about adopting a second bond proposal specifically for street overlay.
He began his time to speak to the board with a comment on city solidarity.
“We need to come together as a unit,” Robertson said. “It appears that everybody is worried about their own district, when you need to look at our city as a whole.”
Robertson said he was glad to see the previous bond for $2 million, which would make improvements on Parklane Road and at the intersection at Anna Drive and Delaware Avenue, plus build Fire Station No. 3 in east McComb.
But, he noted that many of the streets throughout the city need repairs.
“The city streets are in deplorable shape,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a single citizen that would disagree with that.
“And, I don’t know how this would affect our taxes, or I should say, everyone else’s. I’m 89 years old and I ain’t going to pay those taxes,” he said.
“But, I want a bond proposal specifically for the city’s streets. Although I do not have a way to find out the public’s opinion on this, there must be a way to get feedback from the people in the City of McComb to see if they want another bond proposal.”
Rawlings thanked Robertson and responded to his statements.
“We are starting to see some improvements in our city streets,” the mayor said. “We have work going on now on Pearl River Avenue and at Anna Drive, but this is something we can look into and maybe hear from our citizens.”
