Charges against Christopher Terrell have been upgraded from aggravated assault to manslaughter in the shooting death of Tina Courtney.
Terrell, 41, 4455-A Highway 567, Liberty, is accused of shooting Courtney, 48, in the head after the two got into an argument in his front yard on Dec. 21.
She died Dec. 23 at University Medical Center in Jackson. Her funeral is today.
Terrell was charged Dec. 22 with aggravated assault in the shooting and has been held in the Amite County Jail without bond.
Sheriff’s investigator Danny Meaux said this morning that Terrell was expected to have an initial appearance on the manslaughter charge sometime today in Amite County Justice Court.
The shooting that resulted in Courtney’s death occurred about 3 p.m. on Dec. 21. Deputies took Terrell into custody at his house shortly thereafter.
Meaux said a neighbor who called 911 about shots being fired in the area told deputies that he heard three shots just before calling authorities.
Meaux said deputies recovered .22- caliber and .38-caliber handguns at the scene, adding that both guns were apparently fired during the altercation. He said authorities are not sure which gun fired the bullet that struck Courtney, pending an autopsy report.
