The special election to fill the unexpired term of Magnolia Mayor Jim Storer has its first candidate.
Magnolia Alderman George “Lucky” Chaplain said Monday afternoon that he plans to qualify for the special election for mayor.
Chaplain said he expects to file his papers as soon as qualifying for the office opens.
“I want to keep the momentum going that we’ve had over the last seven years and continue to move Magnolia forward,” he said.
Storer, who is city administrator for McComb, announced his resignation as mayor May 6 at the close of the board of aldermen’s meeting.
It becomes effective today.
The aldermen are expected to meet May 27 to set a date for the special election, which must occur within 45 days after they issue the order.
The special election is a non-partisan election, and candidates must submit a qualifying petition sign by 50 registered voters in the city within 20 days before the election.
