The Pike County Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its annual golf tournament and Mistletoe & Magic Christmas open house.
The 14th annual golf tournament will be held Oct. 6 at the Fernwood Country Club.
Chamber program coordinator Shawn Lowery said hole and tent sponsors are still needed.
Lowery said there is still time for teams to register for the event.
To register or become a sponsor, call the chamber at (601) 684-2291.
The Chamber also is preparing for Mistletoe & Magic, which will be held in November. Chamber retail development chair Barbara Simmons said 18 stores have committed to participate — twice as many as last year.
During Mistletoe & Magic, stores offer discounts and refreshments while pushing new merchandise for the upcoming Christmas season.
The event also helps to promote the Chamber’s Buy Local, Shop Local initiative.
Simmons said stores who are not chamber members and want to participate still can, but they’ll will have to pay a higher registration fee than chamber members.
Overall, the feedback has been positive, she said.
“I went to several stores and I asked them, ‘What could we do for you? What is it that you need?’ ” Simmons said.
In another matter, the chamber isn’t holding its annual Legislative breakfast this year after local lawmakers failed to commit to show up.
The breakfast is usually held during the first week of November.
Chamber president Clifton Van Cleave noted it’s a non-election year. Board Member Marlon Richardson suggested postponing the event, and other board members agreed.
Chamber officials the breakfast should generate more interest in 2018 as it will be held a year before Mississippians go to the polls on the first week of November 2019 to elect state officials, including lawmakers.
And in other news, the board named Covington’s Ace Hardware as Business of the Month.
