A Pike County couple were startled out of their sleep by the sound of a crash when a car careened into their house.
No one was injured in the incident around 4:08 a.m. Monday at 3150 Dudley Rimes Road in Magnolia, where a car crashed into Tyrone and Iva Powell’s den.
Jada Dubois told sheriff’s deputies she fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, Chief Investigator Greg Martin said.
Dubois was eastbound on Dudley Rimes Road when the car ran off the road near the Powells’ pump house.
Iva said the Malibu missed hitting her husband’s car and instead hit hers, then crashed into the den.
She said she thought something had fallen in her den and didn’t know until investigators came that a car was in her house.
“I had two bookshelves that were still in the boxes and I thought one of them fell and that was the noise,” she said.
Iva said she heard Dubois talking and thought an intruder was in the home.
“I told Tyrone someone was in our house and we were going to go investigate,” she said.
She said the crash jammed the door that leads from the couple’s bedroom into the rest of the house, leaving the two unaware of what was causing the commotion right after it happened.
She said the crash pushed furniture into a china cabinet in her den and split her couch in half.
“My couch is completely demolished,” she said.
Dubois’ car stopped just before hitting a wall connected to the kitchen.
“She stopped right before hitting a wall that the stove is on. It could have been worse,” she said.
Powell believes that when Dubois realized what was happening, she panicked and hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
There are no charges pending against Dubois.
