A heart attack is believed to be the cause of death for a Brookhaven man who died in the restroom at Love’s Truck Stop in Fernwood about 5:30 this morning, Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said.
Pittman said Joey Deon Smith, 30, 11 Poplar St., was traveling home from Louisiana with friends on Interstate 55 when he told them he was feeling bad.
The group pulled off I-55 at Love’s, and Smith went to the restroom. When he did not return about 30 to 40 minutes later his friends went to check on him and found him dead in the restroom, Pittman said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pittman said a check with a family member indicated that Smith’s family has a history of heart disease.
An autopsy has been ordered.
