A 3-year-old who state troopers say was improperly restrained in a booster seat died Tuesday as a result of his injuries from a two-vehicle accident involving a car and a school bus Monday in Monticello.
Yoshuan Herrera of Monticello was a passenger in a Toyota Camry driven by Alma Gomez, 33, of Monticello, when the car collided with the bus on Highway 27 near Renfroe Road, said Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper 1st Class Brandon Fortenberry.
He said Gomez was southbound when she lost control of the car and hit the front of the northbound school bus driven by Eloise Ladd, 49, of Monticello.
After striking the bus, the Toyota left the roadway and hit two trees before coming to a rest.
Herrera went to the Lawrence County Hospital by ambulance before transferring to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died at 4:04 a.m. Tuesday.
Gomez, who suffered serious injuries, also went to Lawrence County Hospital by ambulance and then to UMMC. Her condition was unavailable this morning.
The 26 students on the school bus went to Lawrence County Hospital to be checked out, but they appeared to have no injuries at the scene, Fortenberry said.
He said initial investigations showed that Herrera was improperly restrained.
