McComb Mayor Whitney Rawlings has appointed a new member to the city’s election commission to replace Lisa Cameron, who resigned last week amid her husband’s re-election run on the city board.
Rawlings chose Realtor Harold Blossman of McComb to replace Cameron and join Tammy Taylor and Annette McCray on the three-member panel. The commission, along with city clerk Jeannette Butler, conducts city elections and certifies results for the state.
“Very sharp man, very smart, good friend,” Rawlings said, describing Blossman. “He’s a good, solid citizen and he wanted to do this.”
Rawlings said the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office will train Blossman in the coming weeks before the June 17 municipal election.
Blossman is a real estate agent with ERA Wild Realty of McComb.
Cameron resigned May 20 after debating the idea for months while her husband Michael seeks a second term as Ward 2 selectman.
In April, she sought an attorney general’s opinion on her service in the position. The AG’s office said Cameron could stay in office, though the opinion advised against it.
Rawlings said that after receiving the opinion, he and Cameron discussed her appointment and she opted to resign.
Cameron was appointed to the commission before her husband and Rawlings were elected in 2010.
