LIBERTY — The Amite County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday accepted proposals from two companies for possible future Community Development Block Grant projects.
However, supervisors aren’t giving any indication of what that project might be.
The $600,000 grant is awarded through the Mississippi Development Authority.
Supervisors accepted Madison-based The Ferguson Group’s proposal to be the CDBG grant administrator for the 2012-13 fiscal year.
Supervisors also accepted Dungan Engineering’s proposal over Neel-Schaffer’s for CDBG projects.
In another matter, county Veterans Affairs Service officer Jim Sterling addressed the board and updated supervisors on what is being done to assist veterans inside and outside the county.
“Last year there were 1,129 veterans in Amite County. We lost 38 veterans in Amite County last year,” Sterling said. “The amount of money paid to veterans in Amite County was $5,247,000, including medical services. A total of $2,408,000 was actually received by veterans in the mail.”
Sterling said he receives calls from veterans across the country requesting assistance toward getting benefits.
“I turn over every stone and rock to get help for people,” Sterling said. “I’m getting calls from Louisiana. Even somebody heard of Jim Sterling in Hawaii and called me. I wish I could help everybody. I help whoever I can. A veteran is a veteran is a veteran.”
Sterling said more women are coming to see him requesting benefits. He urged veterans to sign up for benefits as soon as they complete active duty.
In other business, supervisors:
• Approved expenses of $275 for Northern District Justice Court Judge Roger Arnold and $200 for Southern District Judge Louis Green to attend an upcoming fall workshop in Choctaw.
• Approved $128 to reimburse county Coroner Cam Sharp for uniform shirts.
• Appointed District 4 Supervisor Melvin “Butch” Graves to the Local Workforce Investment Board.
• Approved travel expenses Deputy Chancery Clerk Patrice Cook and Taylor to attend an inventory control clerk training workshop in Jackson next week.
