LIBERTY — Amite County Supervisors unanimously approved a 3.65-mill tax increase and ratified the county’s $11 million 2007-08 budget at meeting on Monday.
Supervisor Jackie Whittington was absent.
The total millage for the budget is 67.10 in Districts 1,2 and 3, and 66.10 for Districts 4 and 5.
The majority of the tax increase, 2.65 mills, is from the Amite County School District’s $2.2 million request, which is about $240,000 increase from what it received last year.
The county’s 1-mill increase will fund an additional $17,000 for volunteer fire departments as well as extra costs for county courts and elections, and salaries and benefits.
The tax increase means $40 more in property taxes on a $100,000 home and roughly $19 more for a $17,000 vehicle.
