ROSELAND, La. — A toddler was killed last week after he ran into a highway and was struck by a car after his family had been attending church.
Louisiana State Police Troop L spokesperson Dustin Dwight said Kaleb Dyson, 2, of Kentwood, La., died after being struck on Louisiana Highway 10.
Dwight said in a news release that troopers responded to the scene at 8:41 p.m. Wednesday.
He said a large group of people were gathered in the parking lot of Mount Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, which is located on the north side of the highway.
He said Kaleb ran south toward the highway and his mother, Waynata Dyson, attempted to catch him.
Just as Dyson entered the westbound lane, a 2008 Toyota Sienna driven by Shyrlee Hammond of Spencer, N.Y., struck him.
Dwight said Dyson was taken by ambulance to Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite, where he died of his injuries.
He said Hammond was properly restrained and cooperated with troopers, providing a voluntary blood-alcohol sample.
Dwight said speed is not suspected in this case and no charges have been filed.
