An Amite County man is recovering at the University of Mississippi Medical Center after a tree fell on him in his yard and a trucker is lucky to be alive after striking a power pole at the intersection of Highway 568 and Bean Road.
The two timber-related incidents happened within an hour’s span of each other Monday afternoon.
Amite County Civil Defense Director Grant McCurley said the first man, who has not been identified, was cutting a tree at his home on Rollinson Road when the tree rolled off the stump and fell on him at 3:56 p.m. Monday.
Sheriff Tim Wroten said the man, who reportedly is a doctor, ran in an attempt to get out of the way as the tree came down on him.
He said the man’s leg was bent under the tree. Wroten said rescuers jacked up the tree in order to free the man, who was airlifted from the scene and taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
An hour earlier, first responders were called to an 18-wheeler accident in Gillsburg, where an unidentified driver for Harvest Haul was traveling east into a curve on Highway 568 when he ran off the road and struck a utility pole. Wroten said Magnolia Electric Power personnel were called to the scene to cut the power so the man could be freed.
That led to a temporary power outage in the area, Wroten said.
The truck driver was not injured in the incident.
