My Two Cents welcomes anonymous commentary from readers. Mean-spirited observations rarely make it into print or onto the website. Constructive criticism with ideas for improvement is greatly preferred. Contributions are reviewed before publication. They should be less than 100 words and will be edited for clarity.
NEW BUILDING, NEW NAME
The McComb school administration building has a name and address, and users are familiar with it. The current superintendent has announced plans to build a fine arts building. Why not use that as an opportunity as a clean slate for a name? McComb has had numerous successful superintendents when it was recognized as a National Model School that could be considered as well.
A LEADERSHIP COMPARISON
I don’t disagree that McComb has had other successful superintendents. Dr. Ted Alexander was the superintendent when McComb High was named a national model school, and I’d attribute that honor to then-principal Leslie Daniels. Alexander was succeeded by Dr. David Powe. I also know all superintendents since Daniels — Leggett, Cooper and Palmertree. Are any of them more deserving than Dr. Daniels?
SPEAKING TO THE SCHOOL BOARD
Another parent and I had an issue as it relates to McComb School District policy. I can’t begin to tell you how many meetings we took with no resolve. The district’s policy is like a dog chasing its tail. It needs to be changed, and what is the administration afraid of?
IN SEARCH OF ROUNDABOUTS
I know the talk about the roundabout at the Summit interstate exit has settled a little. But I have some interesting information. On a recent trip we saw no roundabouts on Interstate 55 north, Interstate 65 East and Interstate 40 East. So why does Summit need one? Use that money to resurface some of I-55 or other roads and bridges. P.S. I like the Two Cents column and hope you will keep printing it.
SAY SOMETHING POSITIVE
To comment on the negative two cents, also being a person of color (white), I may not always agree with Mr. Ryan’s choices on articles, but he allows the individual to express personal views. If someone were to submit a positive comment, I am sure he would publish it. Simply put, find something positive!
ENFORCE POLICY EQUALLY
My two cents come from years working for the City of McComb. When I send in comments, I am speaking from a place of knowledge and sometimes disappointment. You can hire as many qualified chiefs as you want, but until policy is enforced equally the department will continue to be a revolving door. Maturity and a professional work environment can only exist when policy is equally administered.
A WALK IN THE PARK
An Edgewood Park walking trail makes no difference to me, but do the people living in that area want a 1,324-foot asphalt trail in the park? They seem to have enough excitement in the neighborhood. I would like to hear comments, for or against, from residents.
HOW A DRAFT COULD HELP
I know how to greatly reduce the crime rate all over the country. Reinstate the draft. It would take the crime-age guys off the city streets. It would provide training, skills, manners, respect and a chance for a better job when discharged. Plus a stronger military. The cost should not be much more than welfare. The army is a safer place than the streets of Jackson. A win win.
THE ROAD TO MEMPHIS
I enjoyed your electric car columns. It’s just not for me. I take long trips. I drive a luxury diesel pickup with a 25-gallon tank and I can go to Memphis and back without stopping for fuel. It also has an exhaust system that converts exhaust to harmless vapor.
DEPORTED FOUR TIMES
Five innocent people recently died in Cleveland, Texas at the hands of a murderer who had been deported four times for illegal entry into the U.S. What’s the liberals’ answer? Outlaw guns! No borders!
POTHOLE ALERT
I am tired of dodging potholes on County Line Road in Pike County District 4.
A PLAYOFF ASSESSMENT
The NBA is trying to become the National Wrestling Association.
AND THUS ROME FELL TO THE BARBARIANS
There are several good books about the fall of the Roman Empire. Get a copy and every time it says “Rome,” replace it with “Washington D.C.” Then read it again. If you wish to see the Barbarians here, just look around you.
AN IDEA FOR HIGHWAY 24
Democrat Sen. Kelvin Butler and Democrat Rep. Angela Cockerham should go to Democrat Bennie Thompson for federal money to widen Highway 24.
ALIENS AND ELECTIONS
Many elections have been decided by only a few votes. If we give the right to vote to some of the illegal aliens, they can control all of our elections. Is anyone concerned?
