10/11 PROPERTY TAX OBSERVATIONS
Am I the only Pike County resident wondering why our supervisors were “excited to learn” about higher property tax revenue for 2025 but were “caught off guard” to find out that their homeowner constituents would be footing the bill? Either they are collectively guilty of being ignorant of a basic fiscal reality, derelict by not being aware that state guideline changes had dramatically increased the taxable value of homes, or they were aware of such changes but failed to adjust millage rates to avoid such a drastic tax increase.
10/29 A DEADLINE EXTENSION WOULD HAVE HELPED
I am totally confused about all the yakking over the Pike County property tax issue. Since there was so much confusion between supervisors and assessors and legislators, why can’t we plead for an exemption to the time deadlines to correct or adjust the millage rate? Also, if we are going to have so much extra money this year, why is spending going to be so tight?
10/25 IT’S NOT ALWAYS HOTHEADS
Replying to Tim Kalich’s Oct. 18 urban guns editorial — a typical “guns are the problem” statement. Please do an editorial on all the facts. Start with, no Godly respect for human life, no father or family structure, no jail time for minors in possession of stolen guns. Also look at video games, where they shoot cops. Ask the ACLU to start a stop-and-frisk policy. It’s not always “hotheads;” some call it revenge.
10/1 HOMECOMING FRIVOLITY
The McComb Tigers won their homecoming game, and the game was well attended. This was evidenced by the spectators parking throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. Parking on sidewalks, on the edges of grassed yards, blocking driveways, destroying mailboxes and even double parking, totally blocking traffic. There was one bright spot. Many of these spectators wrote thank-you notes on all the trash and litter that was thrown out in yards, sidewalks and streets.
10/18 CITY DOESN’T NEED MORE PARKS
McComb has an excellent recreational program, an excellent director, multi-purpose ballfields and many parks. There is not a need for more park areas. The current areas are not being used. The new walking track in Edgewood near the playground and pool are seldom used. Rather than creating another drain on city finances by building another under-used park, why not sell lots to build lake front homes. This would at least generate more property tax.
10/15 WE ALREADY HAVE WALKING TRAILS
Why do we need to spend money on a walking trail in Douglas Park? There are already plenty of walking trails there — the paved streets within the cemetery. People have been walking these trails for years at no cost.
10/15 FIRST AMENDMENT LIMITS
It’s confusing how some people believe the First Amendment states it’s OK to say anything. A political candidate in Virginia clearly stated he wanted to put bullets in two peoples head. Blame it on Trump and MAGA, I guess.
10/8 RESIGNED TO SADNESS
I think I can speak for most of the community when I say how saddened I am over the recent resignation of the most qualified person on the McComb School Board. I’ll just leave it at that. If I expressed any other concerns, you would consider it unpublishable.
10/22 BITS AND PIECES
When you pay your Pike County property taxes, they will be higher because of incompetence by the supervisors. ... One supervisor said, “We have some money to play with.” ... You can show your displeasure in the next election. ... If the economy tanks, Hegseth and Trump will get us in a war.
10/4 RANDOM THOUGHTS
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has got to go. ... What world is Nancy Loome of the Parents Campaign living in? She said she believes performances in Mississippi public schools are wonderful. ... Why haven’t cell phones in school rooms been discontinued? ... I miss Elon Musk. Trump felt threatened by his popularity. ... Trump didn’t want a cease-fire in Ukraine. How many lives could he have saved?
