TEENS WANT MONEY
From whom do gunmen take money? People who work. Every retail business has “Now Hiring” signs. Jobs are available. So, the police chief’s gun solution is a false excuse. The root cause is a community with a low or no moral anchor. The family unit has deteriorated. Children run amok with no supervision or morals. There must be serious consequences for any teen or adult using a gun to steal or kill. Chief, this is a moral issue.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND KIDS WITH GUNS
Thank you for the recent Two Cents comment regarding climate change. God is in control of the weather. We have had storms and weather for hundreds of years. Also, regarding the recent article on youth and guns being a big problem: Arrest them, take guns away from them and do not give them back. It has gotten ridiculous.
ANOTHER VOTE FOR THE DRAFT
I’ve been saying privately for some time now what Summit Councilman Joe Lewis said publicly in his letter — reactivate the military draft. His points were very valid and thought-provoking. If young men and women like guns so much, let the Army put guns in their hands and teach them to use them in defense of our country. Excellent idea!
AMITE COUNTY TRAIL RIDING
Two shootings in two years is enough. Sheriff Wroten needs to shut this down once and for all! The story leaves out the alleged trespassing by riders — and neighbors living in fear. Sheriff Wroten needs to come up with a way to shut this down or require security, maybe even the National Guard, before neighbors are forced to get involved.
INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER
Davion Taylor, linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles and formerly of South Pike, during his football camps has shown integrity, character and moral character around the children. But one of the other things that he does not do is curse around the children. Most coaches, including in high school, find cursing acceptable, but it is not. What are we really teaching our kids?
BUSINESS IN EAST McCOMB
Selectman Codding is correct — it would be nice, like in days of old, to have a bank, grocery store, pharmacy and a doctor on Summit Street or in East McComb to serve that area. But that may be more a business decision than a political decision. The selectman can’t make a business locate where it doesn’t wish to.
A SUMMIT STREET OPINION
Grow Summit Street is laughable. Have any of the selectmen even been on Summit Street the last 3 months? There are now two junk car lots with old vehicles plaguing Summit Street and its surrounding area. Over 18 years ago the city board attempted to place ordinances in reference to auto shop businesses and abandoned cars. Now we have 2 spots with inoperable vehicles crowding the area.
SERVICE DISAPPOINTMENT
What is our taxpayer money being used for? We can’t get the streets fixed, can’t get litter picked up that’s thrown onto the streets, or the branches from the storms that we put out to be picked up. Please do your jobs.
MARK TWAIN AND EDUCATION
The genius writer and father of American literature, Mark Twain, expressed cynicism toward the mediocre educational system and its leaders of his time. Here is one of Twain’s many quotes that sounds contemporary: “In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards.” All of his quotes have truth disguised as humor.
SCHOOL ZONE SIGN NEEDS REPAIRS
Another school year is about to begin and the city has not repaired the school zone warning sign south of McComb High School on Seventh Street. The sign has not worked for over a year after it was struck by a vehicle. It needs to be straightened and reprogrammed to flash. The same kind of sign is located north of the high school, across from the administration building, and it works fine.
SHOW ME THE MONEY
I have been curious about one thing for the last few years. Where did all the money come from for the American Rescue Plan? A million here, 10 million there. Did taxes have anything to do with it? It always sounds like it’s free all the time.
GOD CONTROLS THE WEATHER
Well, here we go again. Every time we have a flood or heat wave, it’s all because of climate change. On Nov. 3 and 4, 1927, Vermont had a flood that killed 85 people and damaged 1,285 bridges. Man may pass laws for same-sex marriage, but God is in control of the weather.
