WHAT ABOUT 1909 AND 1921?
Eugene Robinson’s Aug. 18 newspaper column told of all the gloom and doom of climate change. At least he didn’t mention President Trump! With his deep research into the subject, maybe he can tell us what was it called back in 1909 and 1921 when previous records were set? Baton Rouge weathermen stated “that the previous records are a bit suspicious.”
OSYKA CHIEF COMMENDED
Things like finding the persons responsible for illegal trash dumping and rescuing abandoned dogs found on the side of the road is more often than not seen as very low priority for law enforcement officers. So it’s good to see that Osyka Police Chief Brian Mullins takes an interest in the things others don’t. Brian, we appreciate everything you do all over the southern district, not just in Osyka. Thank you.
ROAD OBSERVATIONS
Don’t be fooled. The roads in Pike County are not in an acceptable condition. You seldom see Pike County road workers in the Johnston Station area. Why can’t County Line Road be fixed?
THE NEWSPAPER STRIKES OUT
Why didn’t the E-J cover youth baseball in Pike County this year?
THE COST OF CAR TAGS
I would like for someone with the tax collector’s office in Pike County to explain how Brandon Presley, a candidate for governor, can cut the cost of our car tags in half. Our ad valorem taxes are set by cities, counties and school districts. I don’t see him cutting taxes to any of these entities.
ATTENTION, CANDIDATES
Word is that some of you are going to clean house if elected. Who will help you run an effective office if you fire the staff that is knowledgeable of the job? Do you know how many families would be affected? They have family and friends who are voters as well. Think before you speak, acknowledge what you truly know and ask for assistance if you don’t know.
TIME TO FINISH THE JOB
Does the city of McComb keep a record of street repairs? Some months ago, workers repaired a water leak at the corner of Fifth Street and Missouri Avenue. They have not come back and blacktopped the area. The ground has had enough time to settle, since there are weeds growing in the repaired area. You can hardly see the orange cone for tree limbs and weeds.
CIVILIZATION IN DECLINE
I went to a movie for the first time in ages. I couldn’t believe the previews. They were all extremely violent. I would not want to see any of the these previewed movies. No wonder society is so violent. We kill people just for entertainment. I guess that’s just part of the decline of a civilization. Remember Rome?
TRY THAT IN A SMALL-TOWN NEWSPAPER
Jason Aldean’s song “Try That in a Small Town” has a few people speaking out about how abusive it is. The Aug. 1 column on the Opinion page by Mona Charen sure follows that pattern. She was born in New York City. She lives in Washington. She has a book out called “Useful Idiots: How Liberals Got it Wrong in the Cold War.” I don’t think she is up to date on small-town people, especially in the South.
CRIME AS ENTERTAINMENT
One profoundly troubling trend is the glamorization of criminals in the entertainment industry. This not only trivializes the pain and suffering inflicted upon innocent victims but also perpetuates a dangerous fascination with violence and lawlessness. When will the Christian pastors, city leaders, community leaders condemn this violence and redirect our attention toward the real heroes who work tirelessly to ensure safety and justice in our community?
