Former Southwest Mississippi C.C. assistant basketball coach Andy Farrell has taken a winding path in his career since departing Summit, and the Dayton native is now enjoying a postseason run with the Vanderbilt Commodores as Director of Basketball Operations.
Farrell began working at Vandy in August of 2024 following assistant-coaching stints at both Siena and Dayton.
Those were preceded by his time at Southwest, as Farrell acted as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Thomas Gray's teams from 2014-2017.
Under Farrell's tutelage, the Bears finished the 2015-16 season with a 17-8 mark and claimed the program's first MACJC state title in 53 years.
Southwest then ended the 2016-17 season at 18-9, making its second straight appearance in the MACJC post-season as well as earning a berth in the NJCAA Region 23 tournament. The team advanced to the state and regional semi-finals in 2016-17.
Farrell worked in a variety of roles before arriving at SMCC, including gigs at Longwood, DePaul, VCU and Clemson.
Vanderbilt took down McNeese by a score of 78-68 during Thursday's First Round action, meaning that Farrell & Co. are now set to take on Nebraska at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, with the game being broadcast by TNT.
