Centreville Academy beat Sylva Bay 36-15 to claim its first district win of the season Friday night.
Sylva Bay had the first touchdown of the night after Centreville turned the ball over on the Tigers’ first series.
But the Tigers quickly found their footing and went on to score 36 unanswered points before putting in substitutes, allowing the Saints to put a final score on the board in the fourth quarter.
Ben McGregor put up the Tigers’ first touchdown on a 35-yard run and rain in the two-point conversion to make it 8-7.
McCregor did the same in the second quarter to make it 16-8, and Konner Poche scored on a 65-yard pass from Peyton Jones to make it 22-7 after a failed two-point conversion going into halftime.
Assistant Coach Brian Stutzman said the Tigers, with many of the players going without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida for most of the past week, found their momentum in the third quarter.
The Tigers burst out to a touchdown on their first drive with Ace Sellers’ one-yard run, followed by McGregor’s successful trip into the end zone for a two-point conversion to make it 30-7.
McGregor made one last stop behind the goal line in the third quarter but failed to make the conversion, giving Centreville a dominating 36-7 lead before Sylva Bay answered with a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Jones went 7-11 in passing for 171 yards and a touchdown.
McGregor ran for 134 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns.
Defensively, Tucker Lobrano had four tackles, while Sellers, Hunter Wilson, Josey Wales and John Austin Sterling all had two.
Stutzman said the game had been shaping up as a district rivalry match.
“Sylva Bay’s kind of had our number the last few years,” he said. “They beat us two out of the last three years. They’ve kind of turned into the big rival for us.”
