Voters in parts of five Southwest Mississippi counties will vote for a new state senator in a special election today.
The Rev. Gary Brumfield and Kelvin Butler are running to replace Tammy Witherspoon, who resigned her Senate District 38 seat after she was elected Magnolia mayor.
The district includes sparts of Pike, Amite, Walthall, Wilkinson and Adams counties.
Both Brumfield and Butler are from Pike County. They’re both Democrats, although they’re running without party labels since it’s a special election.
Butler previously held the seat from 2004-2016 and is running on his seniority in that office as well as Magnolia alderman and McComb city administrator.
Brumfield is pastor of Rose Hill M.B. Church and is running on his community service, as well as Witherspoon’s endorsement.
