A man accused of shooting his mother is in jail after a brief chase on Tuesday, police said.
Denali Hargett, 18, of McComb, was charged with domestic aggravated assault by McComb police around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Chief Detective Sgt. Victoria Carter said Hargett had an argument with his 41-year-old mother, Baneta Hill, that ended with Hargett allegedly shooting his mother in the foot at their residence on George Edwards Road.
Carter said Hargett fled and was stopped by Mississippi Department of Transportation law enforcement officers while trying to cross Interstate 55 on foot. George Edwards Road is located on the city limits with Summit off Highway 51 and dead-ends at I-55.
Hill was transported to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center for her wound and released Tuesday, Carter said.
Hargett was in the Pike County jail on Wednesday awaiting a bond hearing, she said.
