Amite County fire fighters responded to a fire Thursday morning that resulted in the death of a family pet and the total loss of the home.
Smithdale Volunteer Fire Chief David Fenn said the fire, which took the help the Pike County Strike Team, took a couple of hours to put out at a home on Wheatley Lane near Calvary Church on Wroten Road.
“No one was home,” he said. “Someone drove by, saw the smoke and called it in.”
Fenn said he did not know the numerical address of the fire, the approximate time the fire was started nor the identity of the homeowner, but said the homeowner has been informed of the fire.
Though no one was home at the time of the fire, Fenn said the family’s dog was killed and the fire resulted in a total loss of the home.
McComb firefighters were called to the scene for assistance.
