McComb and state officials scrambled late last week as reports of a gas odor caused multiple buildings downtown to close.
Multiple businesses downtown reported the smell of gasoline in their properties. It was determined to be coming from the city’s sewer lines. Firefighters, with the help of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, were able to isolate the issue and clean the pipes.
Fire Chief Gary McKenzie said DEQ officials traced the gasoline to a leak at a pump at the gas station at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Broadway.
“We had numerous calls about it Friday,” he said. “As far as I am aware, the situation has been resolved.”
