Volunteers from animal shelters across Mississippi and Louisiana that were affected by Hurricane Ida teamed up with Wings of Rescue to airlift 157 animals to shelters in Wisconsin and North Dakota, with a plane will of animals leaving the McComb-Pike County Airport on Tuesday morning.
The Mississippi Animal Project and Louisiana Humane Society has helped organize numerous transports, including two flights, in the past week.
In all, more than a 1,000 animals have been sent from Louisiana and Mississippi to make more room at crowded and hurricane-battered animal shelters in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Shelters are likely to be inundated with strays and pets that are given up after families lost their homes to the storm, said Jessica Cameron of the Mississippi Animal Project.
