LIBERTY — An Amite County jail inmate was found dead in his cell Sunday, a day after he was taken to a hospital for apparent dehydration, said Sheriff Tim Wroten.
An autopsy will be performed on Dakota Adams, 25, of Womack Road, Summit, as the cause of his death was still unknown Tuesday, Wroten said.
Adams was working as a trusty at the waste transfer station in Liberty on Saturday when he passed out. He was taken to Field Memorial Community Hospital, where he was treated for dehydration.
He was then placed in a cell next to the jailer’s office for observation and conversed with the jailer late into the night, but was found dead when breakfast was delivered Sunday morning.
Wroten said he immediately contacted the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent inquiry.
Adams was in jail on a number of charges.
“He was a good kid. He just went down the wrong path,” Wroten said.
“They (inmates) are in my care, and when something like this happens, it gets to me.”
