Progress of the construction of the new gym at the Martin Luther King Center in McComb is expected to be the most noticeable during the next month and a half, the contractor said Wednesday.
Brent Davis, project manager for MitchCo Construction of Hattiesburg, gave a construction update at the Martin Luther King Center Wednesday morning.
“Within the next month, month and a half, you’ll see the most progress as far as with the building itself and the shell (outside walls) of it,” he said. “And after that, we’ll actually start on the interior portion of it. Finishes usually take a little bit longer.”
He said the metal wall panels and roof should be installed in the next couple of weeks.
Davis said the project began Sept. 20 and is on track to be completed by Aug. 5.
Two invoices for work on the new gym were presented at Tuesday’s city work session. MitchCo’s was for $57,327 and M3A Architecture submitted an $893 invoice. The board will vote on both next Tuesday.
“We’ve got some work to do on the exterior around the concession stand,” Davis said. “That area will not have an exterior skin on it until we can finish that wall that goes on the inside.”
Davis asked recreation director Joyce Smith, the lone city official at the meeting, to pass a message about security issues to colleagues at city hall.
“Two different nights we’ve had visitors,” Davis said. “One night, no damage to anything. Last night, we’re assuming this is children, kids coming in, they got on top of a pallet of block up there and threw seven or eight blocks off there and busted them out there in the parking lot.”
“If they could get the police department to make an extra round or two at night, that would be great.”
“The damage to blocks, that’s not a problem. We just don’t want anybody to get hurt,” he said.
