TYLERTOWN — Aldermen decided April 19 to reject two previous efforts at buying products and services and start over.
One punt for the town board involved bids for the town’s annual street-paving effort, which in recent years had resulted in bids from $90 to $100 per ton of asphalt laid.
This year’s bids rang the register at $129 per ton from Southern Paving and $130 per ton from Dickerson & Bowen. At 1,500 tons of asphalt as advertised for, that was a total cost of $193,500 for Southern Paving’s bid. At recent years’ pricing of about $95 per ton, the total would be about $142,500, about a quarter less than the new bids.
After taking the bids under advisement at the April 4 meeting. Board members rejected both and voted to readvertise the project.
Aldermen also decided to cancel the planned lease-purchase of a Bobcat excavator after learning delivery would be significantly delayed due to supply chain issues.
The board voted instead to pursue financing and a lease-purchase of a Caterpillar compact excavator.
Mayor Ed Hughes told the board that a generator loaned to the town for use at the wastewater treatment plant had been reclaimed by its owner from Louisiana after recent storms.
He recommended the town consider the purchase of a new generator once some research into gas or diesel power and power capacity has been conducted.
In other business, the board set a public hearing for June 7 on a request to rezone property at 614 Union Road.
