Now this is truly “fat girl” weather! And I have actually turned on the heat in my house. The thermostat is only on 68 because I am a good world citizen and am saving energy. Also because I have my fat to keep me warm.
That last line was one I used when I taught. Those students were always cold, and I always told them they did not have enough fat to keep them warm.
In the dead heat of summer, they wore jackets and hoodies. It made me hot to see them. However, when they came in from playing basketball in a hoodie at recess, the air conditioning was welcome, even to them.
In the fall and winter, I was loathe to turn on the heat in the classroom because it would warm up nicely once those students and their body heat arrived. Also, the heating system in some of the classrooms had lost their control knobs. So if the furnace was turned on, teachers had to either open the window or turn on the air conditioning. And that is not being a good world citizen, running the heat and the air at the same time.
Kya’s dog has also benefited from the cooler weather. I am likely to give him more time outside since I am not sweating my guts out while doing it. He does not get as heated either, nor as thirsty.
I always say there is no good weather for soccer because it is either too hot or too cold. However, on the rare occasions when the high temperatures are in the 70s, it is perfect weather for soccer. Not so hot for the players that they get cramps and not so cold for the spectators that their noses run.
When SMCC plays soccer at home, and I will be there with my new noisemakers. (And my fat to keep me warm after the sun goes down!)
Lots of trees began to lose leaves earlier because of the heat and lack of rain this summer. But the pear trees across the street at Central Office have not changed color yet. Before the leaves fall, they put on a spectacular show: orange and red. It is truly magnificent!
Finally, I can wear clothes for cooler weather. In the summer, I will not wear sleeveless blouses or dresses, nor will I wear shorts. If you know what I look like, you understand.
Now I can wear my 100% polyester T-shirt that says “Built in the Fifties, Original and Unrestored. Some parts still in working order.” Cotton and linen are my fabrics of choice, and I absolutely cannot wear polyester in the summer.
I can wear sweaters that make me feel like I am in a cocoon and my heavy, durable Carhartt pants that can hold my body together like riding leathers did when doing motocross. Of course, back then I could wear sleeveless tops and shorts, too.
Ahhh… the good old days…
