This letter is to express concern for the local and state crime rates that are affecting our young men and women who do not have proper guidance and determination.
My proposal is to reactivate the draft with the military, which is an excellent source for crime reduction, discipline, responsibility, work ethic and leadership skills. A young individual will find opportunities within the armed forces that may spark an interest and align them with a career goal that will make them prominent local and global citizens.
Enlisting in the military helps achieve other goals with lifelong benefits: finding a purpose in life, serving the country, attending college and training and different fields. It is also a chance to test a person’s maturity levels and provide security — as opposed to committing crimes, serving jail time, the loss of citizenship and destroying precious time with family, children and friends.
“A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Therefore, it is very important to present a variety of positive avenues, especially with our current youth, for the armed forces, education, the medical profession and many more alternatives. It is time to invest in our youth, and what better way to present this that providing positive opportunities?
