“People from all different backgrounds — white, Black, young, old, men, women, from well-to-do families and from impoverished upbringings — proved Monday that the chains of addiction can ensnare anybody — and that overcoming that struggle also is possible.”
I had to quote from the Aug. 27 article, “Independence Day,” because it spoke the truth so loudly and without judgment. The article brought tears to my eyes. 47 drug court graduates — praise God!
It’s awesome to see and read the positiveness of the article, how these graduates have come to a new chapter in their lives. No one did this, they chose to take responsibility.
“You kept moving forward and that makes you stronger than most people will understand,” said state Sen. Jason Barrett.
So many — Judge Mike Taylor, drug court counselor Marty Bass, District Attorney Brendan Adams, Judge David Strong, Sen. Jason Barrett, Magnolia Mayor Marvin Brumfield, state Sen. Gary Brumfield — spoke with such encouragement and support. The pictures showed the genuine concern for the graduates’ well being.
We should all celebrate with these graduates. You may not know them personally, but what a joy to see them achieve such an accomplishment. Let’s not be negative and count them out.
I pray that each graduate will continue to be an example of what is possible after wrong decisions, and how to overcome after making right decisions.
