When I write to the newspaper, I try to be uplifting or informative or otherwise helpful in some way. This letter is none of those.
We are all so very terribly heartbroken about what just happened in Uvalde, Texas. Mere words cannot express our grief. There is no way we can imagine what this small town in Texas is experiencing, especially the moms and dads, relatives and friends of those who died.
This is the kind of grief that’s not going to go away in a day or month or year — this is something that lasts a lifetime. If we had a reason for something like this, it might make it just a tiny bit easier. But seemingly we don’t even have that.
One of the things that concerns and baffles me is that the young man who attacked the school had no criminal history or record of ever being in serious trouble. So the question is, what went so wrong that fateful day?
The only reason I can come up with, and of course this is just speculation, is that something horrific happened in this young man’s life that he just couldn’t deal with, couldn’t see any other way out and just snapped.
But that doesn’t answer the question of why he would take the lives of so many precious and innocent little children and their two teachers. I have a feeling this is something we may never know.
One thing we do know is the love these two fearless women had in their hearts for their little charges. Not only did they try to shield as many of them as they could from harm, but they gave their very lives for them.
Another thing we know that is so very comforting is that we don’t have to worry about the whereabouts of all those precious children and their teachers. They are in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, never again to suffer any harm.
To the moms and dads of these children, and grandparents and others: I’m sure you know this is the worst and most difficult trial you have ever gone through, and most probably will ever face in your lifetime. But with the Lord’s help, you will make it.
He will give you the strength to bear it, to get through each heart-wrenching day. Look at what we all have to look forward to — some great and glorious day.
