An inmate who escaped during transport was captured in northern Pike County following an intense manhunt on Thursday afternoon.
Sheriff Wally Jones said Kriston Ramsey escaped while he was being transferred from the custody of Pike County to Lincoln County, where he was wanted on a drug court warrant, near the county line on Highway 51.
The inmate, who was reportedly unshackled, reached the intersection of Highway 51 and Ole Springs Road when Jones, several sheriff’s deputies and a police dog found him in a swampy thicket near The Mallard restaurant around 6:30 p.m.
Deputies said they spotted Ramsey running across Highway 51 moments before his capture.
“We are grateful for all the agencies that responded and contributed to a quick resolution. Their teamwork and dedication ensured the safety of the community,” sheriff’s officials said in a statement.
