Southwest's softball team traveled to Youngsville, LA for the Mardi Gras Classic on Thursday and Friday, January 29-30th.
The Lady Bears went 2-1, losing 6-2 to Gulf Coast State, winning 8-2 over Baton Rouge Community College and winning 16-13 against Kilgore College.
SMCC played the Gulf Coast State Commodores on Thursday night and lost 6-2. Alexis Dejean went 3-for-3 batting with one double, and Tristan Allen had a home run and 2 RBIs in the contest.
Friday afternoon, Southwest took on Baton Rouge Community College in an 8-2 win for the Lady Bears.
Corin Talbot started the game and Allie Ladnier finished it, only allowing four combined hits and two combined runs.
Bailey McLin, Allie Ladnier, Tristan Allen, Alexis Dejean, and Madalyn Ashford each recorded an RBI in the game. Tristan Allen also hit a triple.
Later that evening, the Lady Bears faced Kilgore College in a high scoring bout that ended with Southwest winning 16-13 over Kilgore College.
Kilgore came out the gate swinging and jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first inning.
Scoring a pair of runs in the second, the Lady Bears soon found themselves down 9-2 by the end of the third.
The very next inning, Southwest rallied with two home runs to score seven of their own, tying the game at nine.
The teams continued to trade blows as Kilgore retook the lead at 13-9 in the 5th inning and Southwest immediately took it back at the top of the 6th by tying the game at 13-13.
The Lady Bears would maintain their momentum into the final inning where they tallied three more runs, ultimately taking a 16-13 lead over Kilgore College.
Tye Boone came in at pitcher for the Lady Bears in the 6th and led the team to three straight outs in back-to-back innings to seal the game for Southwest.
Ballard Kraft and Allie Ladnier also spent time on the mound with Kraft recording two strikeouts. Southwest had 18 hits in the contest with a four-hit game from Jana Phillips, which included two homeruns and 8 RBIs.
Tristan Allen and Corin Talbot each had a home run of their own with two and three RBIs added for their efforts, respectively.
Alexis Dejean and Madalyn Ashford both had three-hit games of their own.
"Super proud of the fight! We came back from nine to two in the third. Girls fought hard all tourney," head coach Shea Johnson said.
The Lady Bears (2-1) will be back in action on Thursday, February 5th when they travel to Monroeville, AL to play Coastal Alabama North in a double header.
