Editorial: About Jobless Rate
Among the accomplishments Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is going to run on this year is the state’s historically low unemployment rate.
In March, the rate was just 3.1%, the lowest it’s been in ages, possibly ever.
If only this meant that more people were working. Compared to a year ago, there are actually about 4,000 fewer persons with jobs in Mississippi.
Thus, a part of the reason the unemployment rate is lower is because a higher percentage of people have moved, retired or given up looking for work.
The jobless rate is good, no disputing that. It just doesn’t tell the full story.
