A man wanted on multiple felony charges was taken into custody Wednesday morning in Summit after a brief standoff with law enforcement.
David Bates was apprehended a little before 11 a.m. at a relative’s house on Pine Street.
“He’s wanted for burglary, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing — just a slew of felonies — as well as a Department of Corrections violation,” Sheriff Wally Jones said.
The sheriff said his department learned that Bates had been dropped off at the house and deputies went there to arrest him, but he refused to exit the house.
“Family members who were in the house confirmed that he was up there and we started negotiations,” Jones said. “We could see movement in the house from a person and called out to him several times over the PA.”
Jones said deputies gave Bates’ grandmother access to the public address system and she tried to coax him out of the dwelling. Bates surrendered not long after that, Jones said.
“He was taken into custody without incident,” Jones said, adding that deputies were about to deploy a drone over the house, and the SWAT team was starting to line up outside the house. “We were trying not to escalate it and just trying to keep it as peaceful as possible.”
Jones said Bates’ relatives cooperated with law enforcement during the ordeal, and Summit police and agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics assisted in Bates’ capture.
