A man accused of breaking into mini storage units didn’t get very far with the loot after his SUV got stuck at the scene, Pike County sheriff’s officials said.
Park Drive Mini Storage management noticed several units had been burglarized and a white Chevrolet Tahoe was stuck in a hole trying to leave Saturday morning.
Deputies found Stacy Nelson Jr. at the wheel of the vehicle, which allegedly contained items that had been taken from some of the storage units.
Owners of the mini storage told deputies that a man and two women who were apparently with Nelson left earlier in a gray car.
Sheriff’s officials said six units had been burglarized.
Nelson was charged with six counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, attempted burglary, possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and introducing contraband into a correctional facility.
Sheriff’s officials said more arrests are pending as the investigation continues.
In another case, deputies nabbed one of three people who are suspected of breaking into an old Brookhaven Road home last month.
Lawmen responded on Nov. 17 to the 1100 block of Old Brookhaven Road, where they found a yellow Ford Mustang that the home owner said didn’t belong there.
Deputies found Toni Smith at the scene. A review of home security footage also showed an unidentified Black male and white female who left the scene before deputies arrived.
Smith was booked on charges of burglary of a dwelling, burglary of an auto, conspiracy, possession of stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Sheriff’s officials are looking for the other two suspects.
Animal abuse case probed
Sheriff’s officials also intend to file charges against the owner of neglected dogs.
Deputies found starved and unwatered dogs leashed with heavy chains while investigating an animal neglect case on Brandi Road outside Summit on Nov. 16.
Sheriff’s officials said a warrant has been issued for the dog’s owner, Lamar Turner, who is reportedly out of state.
