Walthall County authorities helped capture a man wanted in connection with a killing in Lincoln County following a chase that spread across three counties on Monday afternoon.
Lincoln County sheriff’s officials were pursuing Zayrick “Juice” Taylor, 23, on Highway 583 and notified their Walthall County counterparts that he was headed their way.
Walthall sheriff’s deputies placed stop sticks along 583 near West Sunny Hill Road and stopped Taylor’s vehicle, but he allegedly continued to flee on foot before he was caught about half an hour later around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Brookhaven police told the Daily Leader that Taylor is accused of killing 23-year-old Tarvauirs Lyons of Brookhaven early Sunday morning.
Police found Lyons lying in the street with a fatal gunshot wound to the head at the intersection of Vanzie Street and Rance Drive around 4:45 a.m.
Authorities said the chase Monday afternoon went through Lincoln, Pike and Walthall counties.
Third arrest made in campus shooting
The Pike County Sheriff’s Office reported a third arrest in connection with gunfire that occurred at Southwest Mississippi Community College after a search warrant produced a firearm believed to be used in the shooting earlier this month.
Brian Cameron Jr., 18, of Magnolia, was charged with drive-by shooting, possession of weapons on school property, two counts of shooting into a vehicle, conspiracy to commit a drive-by shooting and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, enhanced by possession of a firearm.
Pike County Sheriff’s officials served a search warrant at 6036 Magnolia-Progress Road on Sept. 14 — the same day Dermetrice Johnson, 19, and Charvez Williams, 18, both of Magnolia, were charged in the shooting — and allegedly found the gun believed to have been used in the shooting.
No one was hurt in the incident on campus.
No injuries in city shooting
No arrests or injuries were reported after McComb police responded to a report of a shooting over the weekend.
Chief Detective Sgt. Victoria Carter said officers received a report of shots fired in the 500 block of Lakeview Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Multiple witnesses saw the shooting, Carter said, adding that there were no reports of fighting before the shots were fired and the only thing the shooter hit was a Kia Sorento.
Witnesses gave conflicting information about the shooter’s vehicle, Carter said.
Walthall authorities seek man
Walthall County sheriff’s officials also are requesting the public’s help locating Yerby Hughes, 44. He is a white male with brown eyes and may be driving a white single-cab Ford F-150 with a Walthall County tag.
Officials said anyone who sees Hughes should not approach him.
Yerby Hughes
When called for additional information, officials said all officers, including the sheriff, were in the field looking for Hughes and unable to speak about why he is wanted for questioning.
Hughes is familiar to Walthall County authorities. He broke out of the county jail in 2009 while awaiting transfer to a state prison to serve a seven-year forgery sentence. He was caught a day after he escaped following a car chase that ended in Washington Parish, La., and was handed over to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. Before that Hughes escaped from the county jail in 2007 while awaiting trial on the forgery charge. He was on the lam for half an hour before being apprehended.
