The suspected gunman in a fatal shooting in Magnolia surrendered as a SWAT team approached the apartment where he was holed up for more than two hours on Wednesday night.
Sedric Elzie, 36, of Magnolia, has been charged with murder in the death of DeShauntrall Cole, 31, of Summit. Elzie was being held in the Pike County jail on Thursday morning awaiting a bond hearing that had yet to be scheduled.
Police Chief Sonya Woodall said the shooting happened a little after 6 p.m. at Sunshine Apartments in Magnolia, located on Jessie Hall Industrial Park Road in the shadow of the Sanderson Farms production plant.
She said Cole, who made money on the side as a handyman, was mounting a television for one of the tenants.
“Witnesses said there was no argument. The suspect just walked up, started, shooting, turned back and walked into his apartment,” Woodall said.
She said police have not established a motive in the killing, which makes the case all the more upsetting.
The person Cole was mounting a TV for “lived in a whole different apartment,” Woodall said.
“I don’t know if he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said.
Woodall said she wasn’t sure how many times Cole was shot or where on his body, adding that an autopsy had yet to be conducted.
